S2 Episode 27: faCellitate | Combining Function With Your Labware
Tuesday Oct 06, 2020
Tuesday Oct 06, 2020
On this episode of Start Up the Science, we have the wonderful Véronique Schwartz and Tobias Mentzel from faCellitate!
faCellitate is a Venture Team of Chemovator GmbH. It was created in 2018 from a BASF research project by an interdisciplinary team consisting of chemists and biologists with long-term experience in material design. The resulting product ideas have been developed to market maturity in the Chemovator, the internal business incubator of BASF.
faCellitate specializes in the development of polymer surface coatings for laboratory consumables to create a fully synthetic, biologically relevant environment for cell-based assays. The highly defined and standardized products are used in areas of biomedical research such as cancer and stem cell research, early drug discovery and toxicology to enable and significantly refine the efficiency and predictability of preclinical cell-based models.
In May 2020, the team launched BIOFLOAT ™, their first product line that offers an advanced cell-inert surface coating for 3D culture with superior reliability and consistency.

S2 Episode 25: Kumovis | The new ecosystem for medical 3D printing
Tuesday Sep 22, 2020
Tuesday Sep 22, 2020
On this episode of Start Up the Science we have the wonderful Miriam Haerst, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Kumovis.
The name Kumovis might sound familiar to those who have heard our episode with expert Marie Asano who expressed her love for this startup. After this episode, we can definitely understand her sentiments.
Kumovis enables the creation of medical products that bring outstanding benefit to the healthcare sector and especially its patients. Driven by the sector’s needs, they create new technologies, develop sound processes and provide materials.
The Kumovis R1 is the world’s first FLM 3D printer built for medical production. The R1 allows for 3D printing medical devices with materials such as PEEK, PPSU, PEI or PEKK while retaining original properties.
On top of all that, Kumovis also delivers a range of services including 3D printer installations, on-site trainings and medical product design, among others.
This is how they are creating a brand new ecosystem in the medical 3d printing space and why we asked Miriam to come on the show and talk to us!

S2 Episode 22: Memetis | Ultra-Compact Actuators
Tuesday Aug 18, 2020
Tuesday Aug 18, 2020
On this episode of Start Up the Science, we spoke with Chris Wessendorf of memetis!Memetis was founded in 2017 by Christoph Wessendorf, Dr. Marcel Gültig, Dr. Christof Megnin and Dr. Hinnerk Oßmer as a spin-off from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.
Their core technology is the development of ultracompact actuators made of thin foils of Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) that can be used for applications where movement in small dimensions is required e.g. in locking mechanisms. With these Shape Memory Alloy actuators, memetis is, amongst others, manufacturing miniature valves that allow for small and especially flat fluidic systems in various industries, e.g. Life Sciences, Robotics, etc.To learn more about memetis, check out their website: memetis.comAnd makes sure to follow them on Linkedin. Also, memetis was featured on our #founderfriday series! S2 Episode 21: PlastFormance | Highly Functional Injection-Moldable Compounds
Tuesday Aug 04, 2020
Tuesday Aug 04, 2020
For this week's episode, we sat down with one of our newest startup members at INAM, PlastFormance!
PlastFormance is developing and producing injection-moldable compounds with significantly better physical features than what is currently available on the market.
Their patented technology allows them to craft compounds with unprecedented filler contents without giving up injection-moulding capabilities. The materials that they create are highly functional – the characteristics of the filler-materials (e.g. thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, electric insulation or radiation shielding) are transferred to the compound while maintaing the processability of the plastics.
(Yep, plastics with superpowers!)
To learn more about PlastFormance, visit their website.
You can also follow them on LinkedIn to stay up to date with latest news.
